As I mentioned last week, I'm starting a new blog feature in 2013: Thrifty Thursdays. Every Thursday, I'll post a tip -- possibly small, possibly humongous -- about ways to save your shekels during your time in school. Because who couldn't use a little extra money here and there?
This week's tip is taking everyone back to the basics: Get a piggy bank. That's right, a piggy bank. Now, spending $20 at the mall for a little pink porcelain pig might defeat the purpose of saving money. So find something that you can use as a substitute. Grab a glass jar, a small gift box, a plastic container. Place it somewhere that's easy to access but also out of sight, like a desk drawer. (You don't want someone walking off with it in the residence hall, after all.) And every time you have some extra change in your pocket, toss it in the bank. You can empty it every month, every two months, every semester. And you just might be surprised at how much you can accumulate!
