Profile of Gay Student Groups at Christian Colleges and Universities

By Kelci Lynn, About.com

Name of Club or Organization:
Varies on each campus
College or University:
Multiple
Website:

Mission:
Gay student groups at Christian colleges and universities, while often not formally recognized by student governments or campus administration, frequently form to provide support for LGBT students and create awareness of LGBT issues within the Christian religious community.
Description:
Because of the traditionally complicated relationship between Christian colleges / universities and gay student groups, each campus with such groups approaches them in different ways. Some campuses formally recognize these groups; some allow them to exist but not be formally recognized (and therefore eligible for things like school funding); some do not support their existence at all. On June 16, 2008, Newsweek ran an excellent article profiling some of these groups' efforts and experiences.
Can I Replicate This Group on My Campus?:
Yes, but each campus will be different. Make sure you feel safe, first of all, before taking any steps toward starting a similar club or organization. Soul Force can also be a great resource.
