Ways to Improve Your Campus Sustainability
There's Almost Always More That Can Be Done

By , About.com Guide

Although environmental responsibility and "going green" have been present on college campuses for many years, campus sustainability is still a goal that many schools would like to reach -- but don't. If you're interested in helping to push your campus toward increased sustainability, check out these ideas and resources of how to get started (or continue with the efforts you've made already):

  • Check out where your school ranks on the "College Sustainability Report Card." It's a great way to find out how your school is doing in comparison with others as well as to see what other schools you can contact for advice and suggestions about how they appear to be doing so well.

  • Replicate other student initiatives on your own campus. Why reinvent the wheel? Places like Simmons College already have groups like the Simmons College Sustainability Committee doing fantastic work that you can easily replicate on your own campus.

  • Start with the basics. Does your school have the basics down that a small city or town would consider the fundamentals of sustainability? Are recycling and composting bins availbale? Do students, staff, and faculty know how to use them?

  • Work with your local community / community leaders. No matter how small the city where your school is might be, there is undoubtedly at least one other person in town who is as interested in sustainability and environmentalism as you. Meet with people at non-profits or in city government so you can brainstorm ideas about how everyone can work together toward a noble cause that benefits the entire community.
