How To Add or Drop a Class

By , About.com Guide

Adding or dropping a college class is easier than it sounds. Follow these basic steps so that nothing gets missed along the way.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Minimal

Here's How:

  1. Learn the process from you academic adviser or the registrar. You may have thought that you simply spoke to the professor of the class you want to add or drop. Your adviser or the registrar, however, can let you know the details of the process: what form to fill out, who needs to sign it, and by when it needs to be submitted.
  2. Get the needed forms from the registrar's office. You may need to turn in paper forms of have your professor fill out some kind of electronic document. Either way, the registrar probably needs some kind of written request from you. Make sure you get the right form for your request -- and that you know by when you need to return it.
  3. Get the needed signatures. Adding or dropping a class can seem simple in theory -- at least until you try filling out the paperwork. You may need several signatures, all from different people in different departments who have different office hours in different buildings. Despite all of your best efforts, however, missing one of those signatures is enough to have your request rejected.
  4. Get going! You may think you can complete the request an hour or two before the deadline, but that was before you realized two of your professors are out of town, you have the flu, and the registrar's office is closing early for staff training. Additionally, the earlier you get your request in, the earlier it can be official. And you'll need all the time you can get to buy your new books, join a study group, catch up on the reading, start your lab work and other assignments, and prepare for the next class session.
