Because the About.com Readers' Choice Awards are compiled from reader submissions and experiences, you can be sure that the nominees -- and winners! -- are companies, products, and services that have served other college students well.

The timeline for the 2013 Readers' Choice Awards was as follows:

  • Nominations were accepted from January 14 - February 11, 2013
  • Voting took place from February 19 - March 19, 2013
  • Winners were announced on March 27, 2013

Please also note that the About.com Guide to College Life, Kelci Lynn Lucier, facilitated the process. She selected the final nominees based on the number and quality of nominations received. For more information on the awards, please visit the 2013 About.com Readers' Choice Awards homepage.

1. Best Website for Renting College Textbooks

2013 Winner: Chegg

The good news: Renting college textbooks has quickly become a cheaper way for students to get their textbooks each semester. The bad news: With so many online textbook rental companies, it's hard to know which are the cheapest, easiest to use, and most reliable.

Fortunately, the best way to know which place to use is to ask other students. With the 2013 Reader's Choice Award for Best Website for Renting College Textbooks, you get access to the experiences of countless other college students.

Three finalists advanced past the nomination phase and were in the running for the award. You can learn more about the nominees if you'd like to see who made it to the final round.

2. Best Website for Buying College Textbooks

2013 Winner: eCampus.com (Repeat Winner!)

For some students, buying books during your time in college makes the most sense. Maybe you're the kind of learner who needs to highlight in and write all over your books; maybe you know you're going to need the book throughout your time in school; maybe you're an English major who just wants to have a ton of great works of literature to take with you when you graduate. No matter your situation, if you're buying your books, you'll need to know where to find the best prices.

And while your campus bookstore may offer the most convenient option, it may not be the cheapest. Online stores can offer some great deals but can also be a little risky if they don't deliver as promised or take too long getting your textbooks to you.

Four finalists advanced past the nomination phase and were in the running for the award. You can learn more about the nominees.

3. Best Website for Student Deals (NEW!)

2013 Winner: StudentRate

This is a new category for 2013. With so many sites out there offering great student deals -- whether they're at a specific store, through a group-purchasing site, or even at a site that specializes in one particular field (like travel) -- it seems like the best of the best deserved a little recognition.

4. Best Website for Students by Students

2013 Winner: UVM Bored

College students do amazing things that, unfortunately, go unrecognized most of the time. They spend the majority of their time learning and studying and expanding their knowledge base. They balance work, cocurricular involvement, personal lives, and countless other obligations -- all at the same time. And some even manage to run websites amidst everything else they have going on.
