Greg Woloschyn, the inventor of Food-Bot, is the 2011 recipient of the Carnegie Mellon Smiley Award.
Food-Bot describes itself as a "friend of starving students" -- and rightly so. Woloschyn created a computer program that screens campus-wide email announcements for free food. Testing the program himself, he managed to eat for 5 months on free food at campus events alone. Users can go to a website and see which events will be serving free food on their campus. Additionally, more detailed information is also provided, like the expected quality of food (steaks vs. cookies) and the awkwardness of showing up just to eat (religious event vs. social event).
Unfortunately, Food-Bot is currently available at only 10 campuses, but the service is taking requests from other universities. Current schools include:
Stanford Carnegie Mellon Berkeley Duke University of Illinois MIT Pittsburgh Wooster Case Western Johns Hopkins Maryland Purdue
Happy eating!
